Photographing outdoors in November is helping me appreciate the subtle hues and textures of the season, though that’s challenging to bring out in an image. (Suggestions welcomed!)

Recently, in a nature sanctuary, I chatted briefly with a man who mentioned several other locations we both like to visit. After parting, I kicked myself for not asking if there were any others he could recommend. A few days later, I was fortunate to cross paths with him again and discovered that he is both a painter and maintains a web site listing his favorite walking trails in Chicago. Thank you, Thomas, for sharing some of your discoveries! This image was photographed in Ronan Park.

Flo, the story will ring a bell with you. 🙂

  1. So, what are you going to do when November’s over? Carry on?

    I certainly hope so 🙂

  2. Carry on into December and into 2010, I do hope, too, April. I think this self assignment is helping you stre-e-e-e-etch your photography vision and style and you’re learning that you can apply it to any type of subject, yet not turn out boring, repetitive images.

This image is great – it’s so full of details – which I like – that it has almost returned to simplicity – and you accomplished this by desaturating the colors.

I guess this is what you were referring to when you said the story will ring a bell? If not, please enlighten me?

How about posting Thomas’ website url? I’m sure he’d love to have more visitors to his website.

  3. Thank you, Andreas and Flo, for your encouragement to continue! And for the nudge to consider exactly how. 😉

Andreas, I don’t know how you keep it up every single day — for 3 years now — and with such consistently strong work! There is definitely a perspective in that I have yet to discover.

Flo: I was thinking of our experiences during the Next Step workshop, but didn’t want to reveal more. 🙂

I’m hoping Thomas will see this post, and give his “ok” to link.

  4. This picture with its sparkling white color, its fine lines and the elegant bending of the spikes, looks like a piece of embroidery.
A good presage of a white winter with all sorts of snow drawings.
