Flock No1

Flock No2

For three days I watched this flock gather each morning on the same set of poles and wires, and stay into the afternoon. (The overflow crowd spilled onto the next set of poles down the road.)

A cashier in the local drugstore said they’d been doing that for a couple of days before I arrived in Asheville to visit family for the holidays.

On the fourth day the birds were gone.

What you can’t hear through this image was the noise of their constant chatter. It was an astonishing, wondrous experience!

This morning it was raining, and taking photographs in the rain is something I’ve wanted to try. So, I mounted the 50mm f1.8—lightweight and fast for a dark day—packed a mini-umbrella in my right pocket, a shower cap for the camera in my left, and headed out to scout a new location.

Wouldn’t you know, the showers let up just when I reached the park. And started up again just as I filled up a card and completed an hour’s walk around the lagoon.

I didn’t really want to shoot in the rain. 🙂
