Walls and viaducts supporting elevated trains are ubiquitous in Chicago. In my walks, I’m fascinated by their colors, textures and the tenacity of plant life which attaches itself on or in close proximity.

There’s an oddly organic quality to these hard, concrete structures…

  1. While this is a 2-D image….it has a feel of a 3_D space, where you can go into the opening in the square and it would lead to some other old room full of echoes and mystery.

In India, there are forts and palaces…that are very old and have spaces like these. I got reminded of those spaces and the feeling I used to get when I was in these areas.

  2. Makes me wonder what caused that square – a sign, perhaps? It’s presence caused that space to weather differently from the surrounding spaces. And the way they have weathered is amazing – a 3-D illusion that’s very effective.

Perhaps the troll of the Elevated lives here in his castle, lol. He’s put out a plant to decorate his doorstep.

  3. You’ve both described the illusion of depth which also attracted me to this wall. Thanks!
